Introduction to Byron Bay Photographer Olivia Katz
May 20, 2025Hello there, I thought it was about time that I shared a bit more about myself and my work here. My name is Olivia Katz and I am a Byron Bay based photographer (along with a few other things) and I absolutely love what I do. I’ve been a professional photographer for about 15 years and for the last six based in Byron Bay.
There’s something very special and precious about photographing families. I’ve always loved little people, their curiosity, candidness, joy and tenacity. There is a special kind of spark and magic that children embody so getting to capture this on camera is an absolute joy. My favourite kind of shoots are those where we get to go do something fun together, an engaging activity that allows everyone to be fully present and involved with the activity at hand. It’s usually when people forget I’m a photographer that we capture the best images. Whether that be a trip to The Pass to build sandcastles and run through waves, a hike to the top of The Lighthouse, pancakes at your favourite cafe, or even baking a cake at home together. These are the kinds of moments that lend themselves to really beautiful images. My style is honest, raw and natural. While a handful of posed images can be nice to have, I do find that the most joyful and honest photos are usually captured in the moments in between.
A few tips and tricks to ensure a smash hit family photoshoot:
1.) Choose an activity that your kids genuinely enjoy rather than nudging them to do something that is out of their comfort zone
2.) Make sure the kids are well fed beforehand (for that matter, make sure you are too :))
3.) Plan your outfits a week before, try them on and make sure you all feel great in them. A few things to keep in mind is that distinct patterns can be difficult to capture well on camera so rather go for big bold patterns or solid colours. And make sure they all flow together well.
4.) Bring snacks!
5.) Make it fun – getting photos taken should be, in my opinion, low stress and enjoyable. I really try to make my family shoots as fun for all involved as possible. Let’s bask in the sunshine, build sandcastles, go on a beautiful walk, and enjoy our time together.
